What are the major differences between the Storm C and the Ice Storm 2?

The Storm C is the result of two years of testing and tweaking the Ice Storm2. So it will be no surprise that the two share a number of key features. Both are made from the same super high modulus Mitsubishi TR50-15L carbon in a monocoque construction. Both feature hooked carbon drop-outs on the rear triangle and carbon drop-outs on the front fork. Both have beefed up bottom brackets to increase stiffness where it is needed most.

Where we made improvements on the Storm C is the following:

  • Adoption of the BB30 standard – This new industry standard provides for a stiffer, stronger and lighter bottom bracket. Glacier has taken it a step further by including an adaptor with every frame-set as we understand that not everyone wants to replace their entire drive train just because they bought a new frame. The choice is in your hands, the consumer, where it belongs.

  • Tapered Head Tube and beefed up carbon monocoque fork – The lower bearing outer diameter is increased from 42mm to 52mm, providing for greater stability and strength. This takes the typical 1 1/8” steer and makes it 1 ½”.

  • Carbon head tube bearing race seats – instead of using an aluminum cup and gluing it into the head tube, the Storm C uses molded cups in the head tube, making the frame stiffer, lighter and stronger.

  • Warping Aero-Diamond Down Tube – this is a Fusion of the Aero-Diamond down tube and the Warping Diamond top tube from the IS2. By taking the side seam from the bottom of the head tube and marrying it with the top of the bottom bracket, we were able to increase stiffness and reduce weight. We also softened the transition of the edges of the “diamond” to reduce air turbulence, improving drag resistance.

  • Wrapping top tube seam – the side seam along the top tube extends from one side of the seat tube, forward and around the head tube, back to the other side of the seat tube. This seam is continuous, increasing lateral stiffness.

  • Wrapping seat stay and chain stay seam – same as above, this seam, which is unbroken, extends from the top tube in front of the seat tube, down the seat stay, wraps around the drops outs and extends to the bottom bracket. By keeping the seam continuous, lateral stiffness is further improved, with the rear triangle gaining additional support from the front triangle.

  • Smooth internal tubes – Why does this matter when you don’t see the inside of the bike? Well, if you have a messy internal tube (which you can see when you remove the front fork and look into the head tube), this shows you that the frame was made with excess epoxy, excess carbon and in a multi-stage manufacturing process that can produce epoxy voids and build up. We at Glacier make our frames in one step, reducing excess (and useless) material, while increasing strength.

  • Painted frames – Yes, traditionally we touted the great look of our Frozen Plasma finish, and have kept it for our mountain bike line. However, we also cannot ignore you, the customer, who has asked for a Euro-Canadian look by painting the bike. Well, we listened. We hired Christian Papist of Squeeze Design, and charged him with the task of giving the Storm C a look we could call our own. Christian ran with the project and produced what you see here; a truly Canadian look that will impress on both the podium and on the Sunday group ride. The new paint job, like a Glacier in nature, inspires a cool, fresh confidence and the ultimate expression of freedom. The speed lines encourage the rider to reach for their limits, and then exceed them.

  • The “G” spot – on the seat stays, just above the brake boss, is a small area known as the “G” spot. Here, you will find our new logo embedded into the carbon. To get the G-spot is a very tedious process, requiring steady hands and a personal touch. Every G spot is placed manually, making every Storm C unique; no two will be exactly the same. This feature serves no other function but to look good. We would love to say that it helps dampen road noise, increases rider comfort and reduces weight, but it doesn’t. It is just there for you to admire and adore.

If I buy a frameset, where can I get a build kit?

Glacier Bikes is pleased to offer our frame sets on their own or as a complete bike. This ensures that regardless of your budget, or build-kit preference, you will have your dream bike. We believe in being transparent in our component selection, so you will not find any no-name parts hidden on the bike (e.g. brakes, bottom bracket, etc). We have taken great lengths to research and test the components that are spec’d on our current builds, and believe that what we have compiled is simply the best you can get. If you agree, then clink on the link below to begin your journey towards the ultimate ride. We are under contractual agreements with our suppliers to not provide build kits unless a frame accompanies them. HED is the only exception to this as there is no Canadian distributor for their products.
